It is interesting to notice that in the Old Testament many of the important characters found their wives at wells. That’s where Abraham’s servant found a wife for Isaac. It was true for Jacob and Moses too.
Jesus Christ has a bride that he has come into the world to win. This bride isn’t an individual female, but his church that he has given himself up for.
Who does this church consist of? A wonderful aspect of this incident is that Jesus’ church will contain Samaritans who turn and believe in him as well as Jews who trust him. You could say that Jesus meets his bride at this well! It is a picture that his church contains people from all walks of life, from all backgrounds, who have all turned to him.
The fact that the woman leaves her water jar in verse 28 is very revealing. Her greatest thirst has finally been satisfied. She knows Jesus is the Christ, so can’t stop herself from going to tell everyone else. Is this our response to knowing Christ?
The disciples are very concerned about Jesus physical needs but he has a greater need that must be satisfied. His satisfaction and energy comes from doing his Fathers’ will. There is a great opportunity for him to do this now amongst the Samaritans as God is granting them eternal life. He spoke to them, and they responded personally to him as the only Saviour. It is harvest time now, as God is drawing people from all over into his kingdom.
